Love begins when you dare to show your skeletons

It is winter. Emile rushes out of his house, pulling on his coat. He slams the door. It does not close. At a costume party alive with music and masked bodies, Emile endures mocking looks when his mask falls. Arlette moves closer and helps him remove it. Suddenly, a drunken skeleton appears. Emile panics and flees into the icy night. Arlette follows him into the dark. She chases a silhouette across a stretch of ice, leading her into a shadowed world beneath what turns out to be a giant mask, a space of surreal imagination. Arlette hears Emile’s voice echo. She descends with the help of a skeleton guide. Frightened, she flees and falls from a balcony. Emile catches her just in time. They tumble into a muddy puddle below. With the support of Emile’s strange companions, they rise, soaked and transformed, as dawn breaks and the world shifts. Emile tries to hide his odd skeletons. Arlette reveals she has some too. They smile at each other, bound by wonder and shared strangeness.
